About SMART

Program Overview

The Student Mentor Advisory and Recruitment Team (SMART) is a new initiative within the Pierre Laclede Honors College to build relationships between current and prospective Honors students. The student program utilizes peer mentors to assist in the recruitment of new Honors students. The mentors, advised by the current PLHC admission representative, are involved in various events and activities that promote the education and opportunities available through participation in the Honors College. This program aims to help prospective and newly admitted Honors students make informed decisions about admission to the college and build a relationship with a current student who can answer basic questions regarding UMSL and the PLHC.
SMART members are student volunteers who are enthusiastic about the Honors College, have a great passion for the University, and are interested in sharing their many wonderful experiences with prospective students. As ambassadors of the university, students will be trained for the position that they hold and will be required to participate in a minimum of three events or activities per semester. Honors College independent study credit is optional for students that demonstrate a substantial academic and co-curricular commitment to the program.

Our mission

The mission of the Student Mentor Advisory and Recruitment Team is to assist the Pierre Laclede Honors College with their recruitment of high-achieving high school, transfer, and current UMSL students. In addition, SMART will assist the Honors College community, faculty staff, and support services with developing positive relationships with the diverse student body. Through the continued involvement with UMSL and the Honors College our goal is to increase the recruitment and matriculation of prospective students. Further, we will assist with the orientation and successful transition of new students into the Honors community.
