New Faculty Orientations are provided twice a year for full- and part-time faculty new to UMSL. Orientations are tailored to each group and are designed to introduce: (1) campus services which support faculty and students; (2) campus supports for teaching and learning including integrating technology into courses; (3) service-learning and civic engagement opportunities; (4) research and funding opportunities.

iPad Teaching Circle Meetings
The iPad Teaching Circle drives classroom innovation for UMSL faculty who use an Apple iPad device. The sessions will identify applications and strategies to promote learning and assessment during classroom interactions or make designing course material a more convenient process.

Service Learning
"Service learning is a teaching and learning strategy that intentionally incorporates community service into the curriculum to enhance instruction and reflection, to teach civic responsibility, and to strengthen communities" -Tom George, UMSL Chancellor.

Online Course Development Programs
The Center for Teaching and Learning hosts two programs for faculty desiring to teach online in an impactful way:

  1. Online in 9 is a 9-week structured timeline that allows ample time for faculty to develop an online course in a semester prior to the semester he/she will teach the course. The program has been developed based on current best practices in online education and is delivered via a combination of online and in-person meetings with UMSL instructional designers. Online in 9 is offered in the spring, summer, and fall.
  2. Renew in 2 is a two-week program for instructors currently teaching an online course. The program gives the instructor the option of choosing one of seven important facets of online teaching to modify or improve. During the two weeks, the instructor will meet develop a personal timeline and meet regularly with an instructional designer to create a measurable outcome to implement in his/her course. Renew in 2 is offered in the spring, summer, and fall.

Faculty Colloquia
This series creates opportunities for faculty to learn more about campus resources and timely topics. Designed to be interactive, the colloquia offer a chance to meet colleagues from across UMSL’s colleges.  All faculty members are welcome.
