You may also use an allowance as an opportunity to emphasize the importance of helping those less fortunate.  A portion (or all) of a 10% family tax could be allocated to your church and/or a family-selected cause.

Visit websites for various charity groups with your child or take a field trip to a local food pantry.  Family members may want to choose a different charitable organization every few months.
