How Do Credit Cards Work?

This simulation requires three people (children and parents) for
the roles: (1) Consumer Mom (or Dad), (2) Sammy--owner of
Shoes-Are-You shoe store, and (3) Banker Bonnie (or Craig)--
banker at credit card bank.

The following materials are needed for the simulation.

  • two or three $1 bills
  • 10 quarters
  • copy of Playing Cards and Playing Cards 2, cut apart
  • empty wallet
  • a bank credit card
  • one shoe
  • calculator or toy machine
  • envelope addressed to Consumer Mom
  • envelope addressed to bank (issuer of credit card)
  • copy of What's Up?

Conduct the simulation.

  1. Deal playing cards to the people indicated on each card.
  2. All money (dollar bills and quarters) should be with Banker
    Bonnie (or Banker Craig).
  3. Sammy should have one shoe on display.
  4. envelope addressed to Mom goes to bank; envelope
    addressed to bank goes to Mom
  5. Mom, Dad, an adult, or older child should read the
    scenarios and directions on What's Up?
