Chapter 22: Horatius ad Italiam redit

Semi-deponent verbs; indirect questions; the perfect subjunctive .

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Terra-cotta lamp portraying shepherd with name Tityrus.
As the civil war ground on, and as the countryside became more and more devastated and full of traumatic memories for people like Horace who did survive, wistful memory of the peaceful rural existence which Romans had always revered took on a mythical power. Vergil's pastoral poetry, with shepherds (including Tityrus) singing blissfully about rural life, answered a deep-felt need among war-weary Romans.
