Dividing Your Income

For this activity, you and your child will need crayons, five sheets of blank paper, five empty potato-chip canisters with lids or other small containers with lids.

  1. Have your child write one of the following labels on a separate sheet of paper.

    • Long-Time Savings
    • Short-Time Savings
    • Charity
    • Taxes
    • Spending

  2. Have your child write a goal for both long-time and short-time savings under their labels.

  3. Encourage your child to decorate all pages.

  4. After the pages have been colored, wrap each around one of the containers.  Trim the page as needed to fit the size of the container.  Paste or tape the fitted page around the container.

  5. In each lid, cut a slot large enough for coins.

  6. At the start of each allowance pay period, help your child divide his or her allowance among the containers: 10% for long-time savings, 10% for short-time savings, 10% for taxes, 10% for charity, and 60% for spending.
