REVIEW - ................................. This list is not for those with just a passing interest in German history. The tone of the list is highly academic and, generally speaking, I think only those with a professional interest in the topic would find any use or enjoyment in it. List members seem to use it mostly as a resource, when facing a roadblock in their personal research. This list is a place to throw out a question and hope for a response that will help clear the jam. The list is dedicated to the discussion of German history, covering all subjects and periods. Questions are asked covering a wide range of historical topics and eras. Various topics in recent posts have concerned finding the proper English idiom when translating material, a request for help in unravelling 18th-Century German territorial bureaucracies and sources on German immigration into Texas in the 19th Century. Many of these postings take the standard form of: "I am beginning\Can anyone help\I am looking for..." These queries do get responses. But, there is very little ongoing discussion on the list. Activity on the list fluctuates considerably; long periods can go by with no postings at all. Mostly it is used as a resource by the list members for specific questions, not for recreation or ongoing conversations. One exception was a request for signatures for a letter to be pub- lished in a German newspaper or magazine in support of the East German writer Christia Wolf. This topic generated many lengthy responses. Eventually, someone commented about one particularly verbose member's remarks. This drew the response, "Well, we must admit - at least this discussion group came alive a bit." (Fred Rump GRMNHIST 19 May 1993) The conversation continued; it developed into an ongoing discussion on the history of the DDR and the role of the Stasi in maintaining the East German state. Over the course of this discussion, several list members took the opportunity to express their personal experiences with the DDR to support their positions. The list is not moderated and actually consists of 2 peered list- servers one in the U.S. and one in Germany. Only the one in Germany maintains a notebook. GRMNHIST is also affiliated with the History Network, a collection of history related files and other resources available on the internet.
