One of the enduring fascinations I have with the Internet is its ability to deliver unique and timely points of view. As Czechoslovakia's "Velvet Revolution" segues into its "Velvet Divorce," subscribers to SLOVAK-L can experience geopolitical change virtually firsthand. A sizeable number of messages, if not a majority, come from Czechs and Slovaks, expatriates and citizens, and are mostly in English. Expect occasional untranslated speeches by political dissidents - where else would you get these? Many contributors recognizing the paucity of news about and from Slovakia, have taken it upon themselves to pass on information from the Slovak press as well as Radio Free Europe. Examples of messages consist of Tomas Blazek and Renata Blazekova's Slovak language transcription of Jan Carnogursky's Sep. 19, 1992 speech ("Voice of Opposition in Slovakia," BLAZEK@MPS.OHIO-STATE.EDU, 12 Jan. 1993), Marian Kubaska's list of newly appointed Slovak ambassadors ("Re: embassy," KUBASKA@UAKOM.CS, 13 Jan. 1993), and a raft of comments and complaints about the difficulty many US Post Offices are having with mail addressed to the new country. To my Slovakian friends: Take no offense at this last situation. My spouse has had US Postal officials confused over our attempts to send mail to colleagues in Scotland! -R.
