"His writing is not about something. It is the thing itself." - Samuel Beckett (1906-1989) of James Joyce Hard core (HARD CORE!!!) scholarship. The byzantine analysis by the _Finnegan's_Wake_ folk becomes transparent in this dense, high-level, incredibly thorough and ongoing discussion of the Joyce opus. I have only read Joyce's _Dubliners_ and don't consider myself an expert. So, as an outsider reading these messages I found myself to be mystified, curious, frustrated, and amused. I felt like I'd walked into a graduate level course totally unprepared. Luckily, I realized I wasn't really "there" and just sat back and enjoyed the discussion, fully expecting blows to eventually be exchanged over the hypothetical placement of a comma. No such luck (yet). Contributor Bill Cadbury (BCADBURY@OREGON.BITNET) posted a number of essays that could have been lectures in an ongoing course. Without contacting him, he may actually have been teaching a course via the list. His, and others, postings tended to be lengthy and wordy, but not fatty. Complex works sometimes require complex analysis. FWAKE-L: Rabid, yes. Vapid, no. Not for the stupid. -R. Muns ....................................
