Marcela Manjarrez (Hawn) (BS 1998) and Louis Hawn, and the Centene Charitable Foundation, have established a brand new endowed scholarship – the Manjarrez Hawn and Centene Charitable Foundation Scholarship in Economics. When Marcela was a student in the late 1990s, then Economic Department Chair, Sharon Levin, helped Marcela out with a scholarship, and now Marcela and Louis’s incredibly generous gift as well as the Centene Charitable Foundations’ will help countless others.
Marcela completed her BS in Economics in 1998. Today she serves as the Senior Vice President and Chief Communications Officer for Centene Corporation. She also manages the Centene Charitable Foundation, which makes substantial contributions to initiatives that improve the quality of life and health in our communities. Prior to her position at Centene, for more than 15 years, Marcela held various positions at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. Marcela is giving back, not just to UMSL, but to the St. Louis Community. She serves on the boards of the Boy Scouts of America Greater St. Louis Area Council, the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, and the National Alliance for Hispanic Health. She also serves as an advisory board member for Washington University in St. Louis’ Center for Finance and Accounting Research and on the Advisory Board for the Financial Times’ publication Health Payer Specialist.
The Manjarrez Hawn and Centene Charitable Foundation Scholarship in Economics is awarded annually to a full-time (12 or more hours per semester) undergraduate student who is majoring in economics, has demonstrated academic merit, and is from an underrepresented population in the economics discipline.
