Carolyn Brown Ph.D Candidate, Division of Teaching and Learning I am a Ph.D candidate in the College of Education. I currently teach an undergraduate course in instructional methods and work on several research projects with Teaching and Learning division faculty. I received my M.A. in Composition Theory and Pedagogy from UMSL in 1994 and my B.A. in English and Political Science also from UMSL in 1992. Prior to returning to USML, I taught all levels of writing at Washington University in St. Louis for 12 years. I was also a four-year faculty advisor as well as a faculty associate for a freshman floor dorm. I enjoy teaching a variety of writing courses, including Environmental Writing, Argumentation, Exposition, Creative Non-Fiction, Business Writing, Professional Writing and Speaking, and especially Freshman Composition. I also coordinated and taught the English composition component of the Summer Scholars Program for high school seniors. I am thrilled to be back at UMSL, where I am working on my Doctoral Degree in Education, Teaching and Learning. My dissertation is a longitudinal study of how we prepare graduate students across the curriculum to teach at the university level. I am also interested in how social justice issues are taught in the classroom. I am a member of Literacy for Social Justice Teacher Research Group, which is comprised of St. Louis area K-12, college and adult educators, all who strive to foster awareness of social justice both in the classroom and in the community.
