Specialty Clinic II

561

Grades in Specialty Clinic are to be a combination of Contact Lens Clinic and Binocular Vision Clinic. In Contact Lens Clinic, preceptors grade students on a patient by patient basis. We keep track of whether it is a hydrogel fit, RGP fit, dispensing, or progress visit. We grade the case on complexity and evaluate performance by the following scales:

Case Complexity
1 = Easy (patient cooperative, long-term wear, straight-forward case)
2 = Average (some complications or symptoms, 1st time spherical fit)
3 = Dffficult (patient uncooperative, 1st time wearer, difficult to fit)

Evaluation

1 = poor
2 = fair
3 = average
4 = good
5 = excellent

At the end of the semester, this is totaled up to give us a total profile of how you did in clinic. In addition, we are able to see what kind of experience you had with fits, dispensings and progress visits. Letter grades are assigned at this time. In addition, you are required to turn in by April 27, one successful hydrogel fit and one successful RGP fit. This may be done on a fellow student or a patient. Lenses do not actually have to be ordered. It is highly recommended that you take advantage of the available complimentary lenses and use any dead time in clinic early on to complete these fits. These two fits will be worth10 points (5 each) and the proficiency is worth 10 points. Together these 20 points will be 20% of your overall grade in contact lens specialty clinic.
