Contact Lens I Course Syllabus

A. Course Overview

The content in this course will primarily pertain to introductory topics pertaining to contact lens optics, preliminary evaluation, and spherical contact lens fitting, care and problem-solving. Comprehensive lecture outlines will be provided and extensive use of video will be used when appropriate. Students will be tested from information provided from all lectures and course outlines/supplemental materials & chapters. The course grade will be determined from the following requirements listed below.

Final Examination: 30%
Examination One: 20%
Examination Two: 20%
Laboratory: 20%
Exercise Problems: 10%

C. Course Objectives

1. To be able to understand and apply optics as they pertain to rigid and soft lens design and fitting

2. To be able to determine who are good candidates and which particular contact lens material would be optimum for any given patient

3. To feel competent in spherical rigid and soft lens material selection, lens design, fitting, care and problem-solving

E. Attendance

Attendance will be encouraged at lectures and required for the laboratory course. The laboratory syllabus will be provided by Dr. Henry. You are also required to attend, at minimum, two of the three clinic grand rounds programs supervised by Dr. Crane.

There will also be a team competition that will, in part, be associated with attendance. The class will be divided into four groups. During designated lectures of both Contact Lens I and Contact Lens II courses, team members will be asked questions pertaining to the management of specified cases. Points will be provided for correct answers. In addition, points will be provided for attendance at several non-class functions including, at minimum, the RGP Lens Institute Workshop, X-Cel rigid lens workshop, and a CooperVision soft toric workshop. The team accumulating the most total number of points will be invited to spend an enjoyable all expense paid weekend at Alcon Laboratories in Fort Worth!
