Update on SSB Tower Deconstruction

Dear Campus Community,

This past Saturday, participants of the Annual UMSL Alumni 5K began their race against the backdrop of crews working to deconstruct the Social Science Building (SSB) Tower—a key milestone in our Transform UMSL initiative. The deconstruction of the SSB Tower is the first step toward an exciting new expansion of the SSB Building. This progress follows months of preparation, including interior clearance and coordination with contractors to secure essential equipment like the crane, which became available over the weekend.

Safety has been our top priority throughout this project. Our Facilities team, working with UMSL’s Environmental, Health, Safety and Sustainability (EHSS) team, has taken every precaution to confirm that all safety and environmental protocols are in place. Inspections were led by an independent, state-licensed firm specializing in hazardous materials—following rigorous federal, state and county regulations—to ensure that the deconstruction poses no risk to our students, faculty or staff.

Major milestones of the SSB Tower deconstruction include:

  • Phase 1: Hazardous material removal, interior demolition, early site work, and utility isolation – Completed.
  • Phase 2: Deconstruction (Crane) – In progress.
    • The primary goal is to remove the top floors and the upper section of the elevator shaft.
    • Crane operations will pause for the rest of the week and resume on Oct. 12.
  • Phase 3: Deconstruction (High-Reach Crane) – To begin after Phase 2 is complete.
    • A high-reach crane will remove the remaining sections of the tower.
  • Phase 4: Site cleanup and preparation for the new SSB expansion – November 2024.
    • All demolition materials will be hauled away, and the site will be prepared for the new construction.

Throughout this process, safety measures have been rigorous, including using industrial outdoor misting fans to control dust. These steps ensure there is no environmental hazard to the UMSL community. As we move forward, the North Quad will remain closed to ensure the safety of our campus community.

We appreciate your patience and flexibility, particularly when unexpected opportunities arise—like the crane's availability over the weekend. Please adhere to all posted safety signs and fencing around the site. You can also follow our progress through our SSB Tower demolition camera

Thank you for your continued cooperation and understanding as we transform our campus.

Sincerely,

UMSL Facilities Management
