UMSL is in the process of deconstructing the Social Science and Business (SSB) Tower as part of the SSB Modernization and Expansion project. This work will create space for a new building expansion, which will house the College of Education and the Honors College.

One of the most visible parts of this transformation is the upcoming Social Science and Business Building (SSB) Modernization and Expansion project. In recent months, crews have been working diligently to prepare the site, clearing the interior of the tower so that the deconstruction process can begin smoothly over the next few months.

While the North Quad remains closed to facilitate this work, we want to assure you that this temporary disruption is a symbol of the progress we are making. These efforts will help shape a more vibrant and modern campus that will serve the needs of future students, faculty and staff. Follow our progress on the live feed.

As part of the construction, the Marguerite Ross Barnett Memorial Plaza—honoring UMSL's fifth chancellor and the nation's first Black woman to lead a major American university—has been temporarily removed. The memorial will be restored on North Campus after construction, with potential locations including the North Quad or the new spaces near the Richter Family Welcome and Alumni Center.

Limited Access to the Quad during SSB Tower Deconstruction:

The North Campus Quad is closed to pedestrian traffic with a perimeter fence installed to protect our campus community from construction activities. Please respect all construction fencing and signage for your safety as you travel around the North Quad. Wayfinding signage is located around this area, but we recommend that students, faculty, staff and visitors park in the MSC parking garages during construction.
