Making a Decision

Making a Decision

As mentioned previously, there are usually two options for initiating research: start one's own project or collaborate with a faculty member on an existing opportunity.

The path you decide to take depends on many factors, such as your goals, preferences, project type, and discipline. Sometimes, people may feel they need a “supervisor” to help with their project and serve as a helping hand, especially as a first-time researcher.

Although you can do research independently, remember that faculty members are highly skilled in their field and know the challenges of academic research. They have all the experience to help and advise you through every step of the process. They will ask the right questions and challenge you for your benefit. This will give you a better research experience and life-long friendships, connections to even better opportunities, and letters of recommendation. Keep in mind that the doors to many post-grad opportunities are open through research and lab experience.

To recap, when deciding, you can join an existing program, collaborate with a faculty member, or start your own project.
