Interfraternity Council

UMSL's Interfraternity Council exists to govern its member fraternities through the promotion of chapter well-being, communication, collaboration, and growth in accordance with the policies and standards established by the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC).

The purpose of the IFC at the University of Missouri – St. Louis is to;

  • Foster a healthy and vibrant fraternity community.
  • Promote the interests of its member fraternities.
  • Encourage collaboration and camaraderie among member fraternities.
  • Uphold the values of brotherhood, leadership, scholarship, and service within the fraternity community.
  • Serve as a liaison between member fraternities and the university administration.
  • Provide educational programming and resources to enhance the personal and professional development of fraternity members.
  • Facilitate communication and cooperation among member fraternities to address issues and concerns affecting the fraternity community.
  • Support and enforce policies and standards that promote safety, inclusivity, and accountability within member fraternities.
  • Foster a culture of responsible behavior and good citizenship among fraternity members.
  • Represent the collective voice and interests of member fraternities in external matters affecting the fraternity community.

Both Interfraternity Council fraternities host formal rush processes during the Fall & Spring semesters. Chapters host a variety of recruitment events throughout the first several weeks of the semester, such as watching a sports game, meeting up at the Recreation & Wellness Center, or barbecuing with the members. No matter what, the events are designed to give potential new members the chance to get to know active chapter members and decide if membership is right for you.

What is a "Bid"?

A "bid" is an invitation to membership in a fraternity.  The term bid is most often used to describe a piece of paper from the chapter formally inviting someone to join the organization.

Once you've attended events for the fraternities and those groups have had a chance to determine their membership selections - you may be extended an invitation of membership aka a "bid". There are a few things to keep in mind regarding "bids."

  • There is the possibility that you could be extended bids from multiple organizations, depending on the mutual selection process of the groups.

  • Once you sign a bid - that is the chapter you are committing to and are therefore "off the table" to be pursued by other groups for membership.

  • You are not required to sign a bid immediately after being extended the invitation of membership. Please take your time when deciding what group’s membership makes the most sense for you.

It is strongly recommended that you take time to learn about the chapters on our campus and make an informed decision about which fraternity is right for you.

Asking these questions should help you get a good idea of what your experience in each chapter would look like and help you inform your decision when it comes to pursuing a bid from either chapter!

  • Why did you pick the fraternity you are in?
  • What are the financial obligations to the fraternity?
  • What are the grade expectations of the fraternity?
  • What is the fraternity's philanthropy? How do you all interact with or benefit your philanthropy?
  • What is the time commitment of members of the fraternity?
  • Are men of the fraternity involved in other campus organizations? If so, what kind of organizations do they belong to?
  • What types of community service activities has your fraternity been a part of?
  • What values are important to your organization?
  • What is your new member education/orientation program like? What is its purpose?
  • How will your organization help prepare me for graduation and life after college?
  • What makes your chapter unique?
