Faculty and Staff Accommodations

Accommodation Process

A reasonable accommodation is a work-related modification, adjustment to the work environment, assistive technology, or assistive device that enables an employee with a disability to perform the essential functions of their position. The Office of Human Resources collaborates with all faculty and staff to help provide accommodations.

The first step in the accommodation process is to contact our office, so that we can meet with you to learn more about your unique situation and what accommodations might be appropriate given the nature of your job.

In order to determine whether an employee is eligible for an accommodation under the ADA, our office will also usually ask for documentation of a medical condition to confirm that the condition qualifies as a disability according to the ADA. Under the ADA, a disability is a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.

It’s important to note that having a medical condition alone is not enough to make an employee eligible for a particular accommodation. Once our office determines that a faculty or staff member is eligible for accommodations, we collaboratively engage in a case-by-case interactive process with both the employee and the supervisor(s) to determine what accommodations are reasonable considering the essential functions of the job, the employee’s needs, and the particular work environment.
