Campus Closing Information: Procedures

When the decision is made to close the campus in part or whole due to inclement weather or utility/operational outages, various procedures are used to notify the campus community. The most common types of inclement weather closings are:

  • Day and evening closing: Prior to the start of a day (8 a.m.), a decision will be made to close the campus. This decision normally will be made no later than 4 a.m. the day in question with communications occurring prior to 6 a.m.
  • Immediate or evening closing: During the day, a decision is made to close the campus either immediately or at a determined time. Evening closure decisions will normally be made no later than 2 p.m. the day in question with communications occurring prior to 3 p.m.
  • Utility/Operational Outages: Either a planned or unplanned outage causes the campus to close in part or whole. Decisions to close and the resulting communication timeline are reflective of the event in question.

University Marketing and Communications personnel distribute email and text alerts to faculty, staff, and students via the Emergency Notification System. An announcement will be placed on the university's homepage as well as the university's Facebook and Twitter accounts.

University Marketing and Communications will also notify the following media outlets: St. Louis Public Radio (KWMU-FM 90.7), KMOX AM 1120, KTVI-Channel 2/KPLR-Channel 11, KMOV-Channel 4, and KSDK-Channel 5.

UMSL Alerts -The University of Missouri–St. Louis is closed today, MONTH/DAY/YEAR, due to inclement weather. Day and evening classes and all other on-campus activities are canceled. For information on closures affecting off-campus activities including classes, clinics and conferences, please refer to the host location. On-campus food service operations will be limited to Provincial House Dining Hall. Please refer to the home pages of the Touhill Performing Arts Center, Athletics and Rec Center for further information on their respective activities or events. For information on campus operations for tomorrow, please check www.umsl.edu after 6 a.m. on MONTH/DATE/YEAR.

**MSC Bridge closing time - 30 minutes after campus closing time.

Faculty are asked to post an announcement on MyGateway/Canvas for each class page. This is a beneficial way for instructors to communicate closing information to students. In addition, faculty members can place a temporary voicemail greeting on their office telephone voice mailbox to inform callers whether the campus is open or closed. When the syllabus includes instructors' office telephone numbers, students can be advised to call the office in the event of adverse weather conditions. This is especially effective should an instructor need to cancel a class due to weather while the campus as a whole remains open.

Technology requires users to act responsibly. Using the recommended temporary greeting eliminates the need to change your external greeting. However, an employee who changes his/her external greeting to tell callers that the campus is closed should change the external greeting once the campus reopens. That is why it is important to include day and date information. Without such information, problems may arise if students or staff members believe the campus is closed when it has, in fact, reopened.
