But, tech transfer isn't about only "technology." While it continues to be the process of translating patentable research discoveries into practical applications that benefit society, copyrightable works can also enhance peoples' lives.

UMSL INNOVATOR'S GUIDE 

The UMSL Innovator's Guide provides an overview of the types of intellectual property (patents, copyrights, trademarks), the technology transfer process, marketing and licensing UMSL IP, licensing revenue distribution, University policies, TTO services, innovator recognition, and more. 

LICENSING REVENUE DISTRIBUTION AT UMSL 

If the University receives revenue from an option or license agreement, where does the money go?

Proceeds received by the University for an option or license of University owned IP, minus certain expenses as defined in CRR 100.020 and CRR 100.030, are distributed as follows:

  • 33.3% to the inventor(s) for Inventions and authors for copyrightable works
  • 66.7% to the campus from which the IP originated 

At UMSL, the campus share is used to support the analysis, protection, and marketing of UMSL IP along with initiatives to facilitate the generation and development of intellectual property across disciplines. After a threshold of $150,000 has been reached for a particular license in a given fiscal year, 50% of the campus share is further distributed to the originating department(s) of the inventor(s)/author(s).     • Agreements to out-license UMSL intellectual property (IP), whether patent rights, copyrights, or trademarks. In-licenses are generally not processed through this office (e.g., software usage licenses, etc.) -- contact Business Services for assistance with n-licenses. 
  • Data Use, Sharing, Transfer Agreements (DUA, DTA, DTUA)
  • Fee-for-Service Agreements
    • Service agreements under which UMSL employees provide scientific analysis or other services to industry for a fee.
