Paired Peer Tutoring

If you are an undergraduate student with availability that does not align with our Walk-in or Online services then Paired Peer Tutoring may be a great option for you.

Here’s how it works:

  • Use the Request Support form to connect with us.
  • We will take a look and connect you with the tutorial support that best fits your availability.
  • If we find that Paired Peer is the best fit, your request will be made available to tutors in our database.
  • If we have a match, we’ll put you and your tutor in touch via email.
  • You and your tutor figure out a schedule that works for both of you to meet up in person (on campus) or online.
  • You make a commitment to meet up with your tutor at the same days and times each week throughout the semester.
  • You can meet for up to 5 hours/week of tutoring sessions.

Paired Peer Frequently Asked Questions

How do I submit my request?

Request forms can be submitted online by completing the online form in the Request Support tutoring tab on the UTC website.

How long does it typically take for my tutor request to be processed?

All tutoring requests are processed within 10 days of receiving the request.

Is there a limit to the number of classes that I can request a tutor for?

Due to the high demand of Paired Peer tutors, students are currently limited to receiving tutoring in two courses. All students are encouraged to sign-up for a tutor as soon as possible to ensure that a placement can be made in a timely manner.

What happens if the University Tutoring Center is unable to place me with a tutor?

If a placement cannot be made, the student is provided with an alternative option such as NetTutor, a UTC Walk-in tutor, or another lab on campus.

How many hours of academic support can I receive?

All students requesting tutorial services can receive up to 5 hours of academic support per week, per requested course.

If a placement can be made with a tutor, when will my tutor reach out to me to schedule our first tutoring session?

Once a placement has been made, the director or tutoring coordinator of the University Tutoring Center will pass along your contact information to your tutor. Your tutor will then have 2 business days to reach out to you to schedule your first tutoring session.

Is there tutoring available for graduate students?

At this time, the UTC is not equipped to provide tutoring for graduate students.

I have a busy schedule, how are tutoring services scheduled?

Tutoring times and locations are dependent upon the tutor and the tutee’s schedules. Tutoring sessions are based upon mutual availability.

Where are tutoring services provided?

Tutoring can occur at any public place on UMSL’s campus, and the location is decided upon mutually by the tutor and tutee.

If I need to cancel an appointment, what should I do?

Students receiving tutoring are asked to cancel 24 to 48 hours in advance. If there is an emergency, the student can contact the UTC manager or a UTC tutoring coordinator, who will then inform your tutor(s) that the tutoring session will need to be rescheduled.

Am I allowed to request an alternate tutor if things don’t work out with my initially assigned tutor?

Yes, alternate placements can be made by sending a request for a different tutor to the University Tutoring Center manager or a tutoring coordinator.
