ABSTRACT: The Bob Goodwin, Jr. Collection is the personal collection of Mr. Goodwin, a former Maritime Administration official with the U.S. Department of Transportation. The collection consists of publications, papers, proceedings, publicity documents, operational papers, correspondence, photographs, slides, negatives and audio/visual materials.

SCOPE:The Goodwin Collection has been arranged into four series; records; photographs, slides and negatives; audio and video tapes; and towboat flags. In some cases the series have been further broken down into subseries and arranged alphabetically when possible. There was no original order to the collection - the order has been imposed by Library staff.

HISTORY: Bob Goodwin was born on May 26, 1946 at St. Mary's Hospital in St. Louis. Like many people of his era in St. Louis, Bob attended Catholic school, his formal education beginning at St. Margret's Parish, and after primary school continuing on to Vianney High School, where science and history came easy to him. Bob was a consumate sports enthusiast, and he played at one point or another in his formative years baseball, track, soccer and football. Bob also was very enthusiastic about extra-curricular activities, including the cub and boy scouts and Glee Club. Bob continued his education by obtaining a BA in Psychology from St. Benedicts College and graduate courses from the School of Law at St. Louis University.
Bob met his wife, Bonnie, and fathered five children with her, along the way also having a lone and distinguished professional carreer. Before working for MARAD, he worked in both the private and public sectors of the river industry, for Jefferson Barracks Marine Service, St. Louis Shipbuilding and Steel, American Waterways Operators, Inc., Fabrick Marine, the St. Louis Port Authority, the East-West Gateway Coordinating Council, Water Resources Congress, and the Material Sales Co. Bob was also involved heavily in a volunteer capacity in many local organizations, both historical and river-related; The Propeller Club, the Mercantile Library, the St. Louis Port Council, the St. Catherine Laboure School, the St. Louis Fleeters Association, the East Side Rivermens Association, and the County Catholic Credit Union. Mr. Goodwin worked for MARAD from 1995 to the time of his death, in 2010.

When accessible, this collection is available for on-site use only in the Rare Book and Manuscripts Reading Room. Some of the collection may be photocopied, digitally scanned or photographed, depending on condition. Researchers are advised to call ahead concerning changes in hours due to University intersessions and holidays.
