HISTORY: American Waterways Operators is the national association representing the inland and coastal tugboat, towboat, and barge industry. Organized in 1944 as the national trade association representing the inland barge and towing industry, it expanded its mission and scope in 1969 to include the coastal sector of the industry. At present the AWO is comprised of more than 350 member companies, including bulk commodities transporters; ship docking and harbor services operators; fueling, bunkering, and lightering services operators; shipyards; and affiliated services members. The AWO has for over 50 years defined and advocated industry views with policymakers and federal officials, and promoted a greater understanding of the domestic waterborne transportation industry's safe and environmentally sound contribution to the U.S. economy.
ACCESS: This is Special Collection P-009. Currently, access to this collection is restricted. When possible, this collection is available for on-site use only in the Rare Book and Manuscripts Reading Room.
