SCOPE: The archive consists of photographs of society directors and three St. Louis nursing school group photographs, newspaper clippings from the 1930s to the 1950s, prescriptions from 1916 - 1920, ribbon name badges from the American Medical Association annual conferences primarily from the 1940s including ribbon badges from the 1910 conference in St. Louis and ribbons from the 1939 conference in St. Louis. Collection also includes oil portraits of doctors and an annual publication from 1939 and 1986.

EXTENT: Approximately 2 linear feet plus oversize portraits.

HISTORICAL NOTE: The St. Louis Medical Society was founded in 1836 and was renamed the St. Louis Metropolitan Medical Society in 1979 when the St. Louis County Medical Society, formed in 1905, merged with it. The Society supports member physicians through medical education, professional networking, and advocacy. It is the largest component society of the Missouri State Medical Association, which is an affiliate of the American Medical Association.

ARRANGEMENT: The archival materials consist of photographs of society directors, newspaper clippings from the 1930s and 1940s, one volume of an annual publication from 1939 and from 1986, prescriptions from 1910 – 1920 (Box 1, stored offsite), ribbon name badges from the American Medical Association annual conferences primarily from the 1940s including ribbon badges from the 1910 conference in St. Louis and ribbons from the 1939 conference in St. Louis (Box 2, stored onsite), and oversize items including a board with attached directors’ photographs of the St. Louis County Medical Society from 1956-1978, a commemorative broadside regarding the St. Louis Medical Library Association, three small panoramic photographs of nursing students from the 1920s (Oversize folders stored onsite).

ACCESS: This collection can be viewed on-site in the Rare Book and Manuscripts Reading Room.  Some of the material may be photocopied, digitally scanned or photographed, subject to condition and other access restrictions.
