ABSTRACT: Documents related to the legacy of celebrated dancer Katherine Dunham.

DATE: circa 1978-1979

SCOPE: This collection of newspaper clippings and article drafts focuses on a gala held in Katherine Dunham’s honor at Carnegie Hall in New York City on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, 1979. At the gala, Dunham was presented with the Albert Schweitzer Music Award for her contributions to the performing arts and her dedication to humanitarian work. She was honored by former students, including actress and singer Eartha Kitt. The collection also includes an outline of goals for the Performing Arts Training Center in East St. Louis (also known as the Katherine Dunham Center for the Performing Arts).
