ABSTRACT: Document signed by Frederick Bates, 1819.

SCOPE: This collection consists of a document signed by Frederick Bates, then Secretary of the Territory of Missouri. The 1819 document appoints Williamson H. Curtis sheriff of Cooper County. The territorial seal and a note from David Toad, a Judge of the Northwestern Circuit, are also included.

EXTENT: One folder.

HISTORY: Frederick Bates (1777-1825) held political positions in the Michigan Territory, Louisiana Territory, and Missouri Territory before being elected as the 2nd Governor of Missouri in 1824. He was also the elder brother of Edward Bates, the U.S. Attorney General appointed by President Abraham Lincoln.
