Abstract: The Mark Twain Bill of Payment collection consists of the first bill of payment that Mark Twain received for "The Innocents Abroad" on November 23, 1869 for $2,755.91.
Scope and Content note: The Mark Twain Bill of Payment collection consists of the first bill of payment that Mark Twain received for "The Innocents Abroad." The check is dated November 23, 1869 and is for $2,755.91. The check is made out to Samuel L. Clemens instead of his pen name, Mark Twain. Twain signed the check over to John De La Fletcher Slee, who was a sales manager for Jervis Langdon's coal firm and a good friend of Twain's. Slee cashed the check in Buffalo, New York where he resided.
