Introduction:

This collection contains three copies of Abel Janney’s narrative of his capture by the Shawnee Indians on March 12, 1782.

Biographical Note:

This collection contains the narrative of Abel Janney’s captivity by Shawnee Indians in 1782.  The account describes Janney’s capture, atrocities he witnessed against other captives (John Whart, Col. Crawford and his son-in-law John Harrison), Janney’s escape, and how the Ottawa Indians led him to safety.

Collection Scope:

This collection contains one printed copy of the Narrative of the Capture of Abel Janney by the Indians in 1782, published in the Ohio Archaeological & Historical Society Publication, January 1900, v. 8, no. 30, pp: 465-473; one bound handwritten narrative, and one edited transcription.
