Dr. Christoph Schiessl earned his doctorate in history at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan (Ph.D., 2009), after finishing his master’s degree in history and political science at the Katholische Universität Eichstätt in Germany (M.A., 1998). His historical research has focused on suspected Nazi collaborators, mostly from Eastern Europe, as immigrants to the United States after the end of World War II. His book based on this research, entitled Alleged Nazi Collaborators in the United States after World War II, came out in 2016 with Lexington Books. Since then, his research has focused on ethnic Germans from Eastern Europe and their immigration to the United States since 1948.
Prof. Schiessl has taught at the Pierre Laclede Honors College at UMSL since 2014. He has been teaching a large variety of courses in the Honors College, including Cultural Traditions I and II, Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, War Crimes, War Criminals, and War Crimes Trials in the 19th and 20th Century, and Europe from 1945 to Today: From Zero Hour to the 21st Century. He also has taken students on study abroad trips to Germany to study the history and memory of Nazi Germany.
In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he is the academic advisor within the Honors College for students majoring in biology, chemistry, biochemistry/biotechnology (all non-health science), computer science, computer technology, cybersecurity (computer science emphasis), mathematics, and history. Moreover, recently he became the coordinator for the Honors internship program.
