Spring 2025: Principles of GIS Workshop for UMSL Faculty

The UMSL Geospatial Collaborative invites faculty members to participate in a hands-on training workshop on the Principles of GIS. This workshop is designed to introduce faculty to the foundational concepts of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and equip them with essential geospatial skills that can be integrated into their research and teaching.

In-Person: UMSL Geospatial Collaborative, Benton Hall, 4th Floor, GIS Lab 401

Virtual: Live-streamed via an online platform

The workshop will be conducted in a hybrid format, allowing participants to join in person at Benton Hall or virtually via a live-streaming session. Faculty members attending virtually should have a Windows operating system computer with ArcGIS Pro installed to fully engage in the hands-on exercises. IT support is available for assistance with software installation prior to the workshop.
  • Understand the core principles and applications of GIS
  • Learn the basics of spatial data, map creation, and analysis
  • Gain hands-on experience using ArcGIS Pro
  • Explore ways to integrate GIS into research and teaching
  • Welcome and Introductions to the Geospatial Collaborative (15 mins)
  • Intro to GIS (15 mins)
  • Intro to ArcGIS Pro (30 mins)
  • Finding and managing GIS data (30 mins)
  • Queries, joins, Vector data analysis (90 mins)
  • Sharing data (30 mins)
  • A Windows computer with ArcGIS Pro installed
  • Stable internet connection
  • IT support is available for software installation assistance

Faculty members interested in participating should register in advance to receive workshop materials and ensure proper software setup.
