Spring and Summer 2022
In the Spring and Summer of 2022, K-12 Literacy Educators in St. Louis Public Schools were invited to a professional development series with Dr. Alfred Tatum called “Creating an Intellectual Infrastructure of Advanced Literacy and Knowledge Development for Students in the Elementary, Middle, and Secondary Grades."
In July 2022, young people registered in UMSL’s Literacy Clinic were invited to participate in a Writing Residency with award winning author Kelly Starling-Lyons.
Summer 2021
During Summer 2021, the E. Des Lee Tutorial Endowment sponsored a partnership between UMSL literacy tutors, Woerner Elementary, and Bookmakers. Tutors were partnered with students for small group literacy instruction in the summer school program. A special part of the initiative was learning from bookmakers Dr. Jesse Gainer and Dr. Nancy Gainer. Everyone learned how to create a community of writers who center family and community
knowledge and publish beautiful books using recycled materials. “Editoriales Cartoneras,” as this tradition of book-making is called, is rooted in the desire to put writing and publishing in the hands of children, youth, teachers, and families.
