African American Read-In

GWP is celebrating African American authors through NCTE's National African American Read-In celebration. The National African American Read-In (AARI) is an effort to encourage communities to read together, centering African American books and authors. It was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month. This initiative has reached more than 6 million participants around the world.

  Opportunities to participate:

• TEACHERS: Read books or poems by African American authors in your classrooms. Share your classroom events with us through a photo or video. We will give you a shout-out on our social media channels. Need ideas for book selections or other ways to celebrate? Check out NCTE's recommendations. 

• AFRICAN AMERICAN WRITERS: If you are an African American writer (youth or adult) who would like to share your writing as part of our celebration, please record a video of you reading your piece and submit the video link using the participation form. We will publish your video on our website and post on our social media channels. See below for a video submission of local African American writer, Jason Vasser-Elong.

• PARTICIPATING TEACHERS & WRITERS: All participants who complete the particiaption form are registered for a chance to win a gift card to the local African-American owned bookstore - EyeSeeMe.
