Natalie Bolton is an associate professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis within the College of Education, Department of Educational Leadership and Preparation. She earned her Ph.D. in educational leadership from the University of Louisville. She has an M.A. in secondary education with an emphasis in social studies education, and a B.A. in secondary education from the University of Kentucky.
Dr. Bolton’s work experiences include middle school teacher; middle school assistant principal, Kentucky Department of Education Social Studies Consultant, and University of Louisville Co-Director of the Nystrand Center of Excellence in Education; Director of the Office of Civic Education and Engagement; and assistant professor.
Currently, Dr. Bolton conducts research on assessment literacy, standards-based grading and reporting, program evaluation, cognitive sciences, and social studies/civic education. She teaches courses related to instruction, learning, instruction, and assessment, education research, quantitative statistics, program evaluation, and serves as a research methodologist on doctoral committees. Additionally, she is an assessment literacy and program evaluation consultant. She works with schools and education organizations in the U.S. and internationally on designing and critiquing cognitive and affective assessments, developing and refining standards-based grading and reporting systems, designing and evaluating curriculum, conducting program evaluations, and supporting professional learning related to assessment literacy. Natalie demonstrates an unwavering commitment to students becoming successful learners by embedding formative assessment into her teaching practices. She was recognized in 2012 for UMSL's most prestigious teaching award, The Gerald and Deanne Gitner Excellence in Teaching Award.
