The College of Education offers a TESOL program, which helps prepare students who are planning to teach content classes with English language learners (ELLs) and ELLs in either the United States or other countries. The 18-credit program confirms the completion of a linguistically-focused program of preparation for work in the field of TESOL. Includes a one-semester internship, to be approved by faculty.
The Graduate Certificate in TESOL program includes 18 of the 30 credit hours required by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) toward the ELL K-12 teaching certification for those holding initial certification. The TESOL program is also offered as a focus area for the Master’s in Education (M.Ed.) and the Ph.D. degree programs. Applicants who wish to earn a Graduate Certificate in TESOL must apply for admission to the certificate program and to the Graduate School at the University of Missouri –St. Louis as a non-degree student or as a Master’s or doctoral student. Applicants must have a 2.75 GPA in undergraduate coursework to be admitted. A background in K-12 or adult education is desirable.
