Professor Turner received her BA degree from Arkansas State University; her MEd. in Adult Education and Ed.D. in Secondary Education and Reading from the University of Arkansas. She has served as a Social Studies Teacher, Reading and Communications Specialist, Educational Consultant, Adult Educator, Family Literacy Specialist, and Teacher Educator. She has served as a board member for the College Reading Association (Association of Literacy Educators and Researchers), English Language Learning Center, Suburban St. Louis International Reading Association, Scholarship Foundation, and MO Partners of the Americas. She has served as a member of the MO Advisory Council on Education's Task Force on What Works in Schools Design Team, the MO Advisory Council on Education Certification, and the MO Reading Leadership Team, and as a member of the MO Department of Elementary and Secondary Education State Evaluation Team. She is a member of the National Conference for Research in Literacy, the International Reading Association, and International Council on Education for Teaching, Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Delta Kappa. Dr. Turner has served as a visiting Professor in South Africa, Brazil, and Bolivia and is keenly interested in international education. She is currently serving as a Founder's Professor working with graduate students exploring literacy issues of African American males, literacy challenges in urban schools, and stress factors in urban teachers.
