Message from the Office of the Chancellor

December 10, 2021 - A message from Chancellor Sobolik to UMSL students

Dear Tritons,

As finals week begins and this semester comes to an end, I want to reach out and offer my encouragement for those remaining last-minute hurdles that can sometimes feel the most difficult or tedious. Hear me when I say with all sincerity: Keep going. You’ve got this.

I also want to share my gratitude and admiration for all you’ve accomplished up to this point at UMSL. For some of you, those who are preparing for commencement and whatever comes next, this is a true turning point. A moment in time to celebrate, breathe deeply and feel both pride and excitement. I hope you’ll stop and take it all in. You’ve earned it. In fact, considering how unique and trying recent times have been, I’d say you’ve more than earned it, and I want you to know how proud and impressed I am with your fortitude. Please know that all that you have accomplished is no small thing. You have done something extraordinary during extraordinary times. How do I know this? Because you could’ve given up a million times for a million understandable reasons and yet, you didn’t. All along, you had this. You kept going. It’s more than impressive; it’s inspiring.

Lastly, I would be remiss if I didn’t extend extra congratulations and warm wishes to those students (now alumni!) whose earlier celebrations had to be virtual during the pandemic. I’m honored and thrilled that you’ll be joining us now to celebrate in person as you well deserve to. I can’t wait to see you on commencement weekend!

May the heartfelt warmth and goodwill I feel for each of you come across now when I say, simply: Good for you. Thank you for choosing UMSL. I’m glad you got your start here. But please: Don’t stop here. And don’t be a stranger. Keep in touch and let us know all of your future accomplishments.

Gratefully forward,

Kristin Sobolik
