Here’s how to prepare:

  • Schedule Early: Book your appointment as soon as possible, especially during busy registration periods.

  • Review Your Plan: Use MyGateway and MyDegree to identify courses and requirements you need to complete.

  • Bring Questions: Prepare a list of topics or concerns to discuss during your session.

What to expect during your appointment:

  • Honest and open conversations about your goals and challenges.

  • Guidance to help you stay on track and succeed.

  • A plan tailored to prepare you for upper-level coursework and long-term success.

Your responsibilities

You play an important role in your academic success. To get the most out of advising:

  • Take ownership of your academic journey by learning about UMSL’s policies and tools like MyGateway and Triton Connect.

  • Meet with your advisor regularly to review your progress and update your goals.

  • Follow through on recommendations and stay engaged in your academic planning.

Your academic pathway

At UMSL, you’ll start with a major interest aligned with your goals. This focus allows you to explore your field while staying on track toward graduation. By the end of your second year, you’ll officially declare your major and move into upper-level coursework with confidence and a clear plan for success.

Preparing for Upper-Level Coursework

As you complete your first two years, we help you prepare for success in your upper-level courses. You’ll transition to advising in the college that houses your major once you:

  • Complete 60 credit hours (junior status).

  • Meet program requirements, including college-level English and Math.

  • Confirm your major during your fourth semester so you’re ready for the transition the following term.

We’ll ensure the transition to your college advising team is seamless and that you’re equipped with the skills and knowledge to excel in advanced coursework.
