Giving to UMSL Libraries

UMSL operates two campus libraries: the Thomas Jefferson Library and the St. Louis Mercantile Library. Combined holdings include more than 1 million volumes, 1.3 million government documents, 1.2 million microfilms, nearly 3,000 serial titles and access to more than 14,000 electronic journals.

The Thomas Jefferson Library is the main campus library and strives to provide UMSL’s students with the best possible resources. The St. Louis Mercantile Library opened in 1846 and is the oldest cultural institution in continuous operation in St. Louis. In addition to its extraordinary collection of rare books, the Mercantile is a museum with a variety of exhibits on display throughout the year. The library includes two very distinctive specialized collections: the Herman T. Pott National Inland Waterways Library and the John W. Barriger III National Railroad Library.

Generous financial support allows both libraries to remain accessible to students, scholars, researchers and the broader public in the region, nationally and internationally.

Transform UMSL - University Libraries

University libraries are currently undergoing an exciting transformation. The Thomas Jefferson Library’s main entry level will become a collaborative space to enhance the traditional library experience while upgrading it to become a more modern, engaging and flexible area. Renovating the library’s fifth floor will create a new home for library administration and staff, in addition to collections. The St. Louis Mercantile Library will create a vibrant art gallery on the second floor to showcase its unparalleled art collection. Read more about Transform UMSL.
