Malindy's Freedom: The Story of a Slave Family
"Malindy’s Freedom" recounts the true tale of a woman, born a free Cherokee Indian, who was unlawfully enslaved as a child in Missouri . Malindy married a freedman and gave birth to five children, creating a family she would fight her whole life to keep together. Malindy’s great-granddaughters, Mildred Johnson and Theresa Delsoin, are now sharing the story passed on through their family for generations. Johnson, Delsoin and co-editor Stuart Symington, Jr., will be on hand to discuss the book.

Bridging the Waters: Africa to America A very special exhibit featuring invited African American artists Tom Sleet, Adelia Parker Castro, Sandra Niclerson, Gunda Lock, and Mamady Sidime. These fine sculptors will exhibit their work in the front circle of the St. Louis Artists’ Guild in Oak Knoll Park . Spirit of the "Black Snake"
The compelling story of a survivor from the slave ship Amistad is reenacted by Carol Shelton. Sarah Magru ("Black Snake") Kinson tells of her trials and hardships, including life before enslavement, her feelings of fear and hopelessness during captivity, and finally her journey to become the first African woman to attend an American college. Docent-led tours of the Captive Passage exhibition will follow the program. Breakfast is available prior to the program, at 9:00am , for a cost of $11.95
