More than 75% of older adults have multiple chronic health conditions, which increases the risk for depressive disorders and reduced quality of life. Many of these individuals also receive support from a female family member or friend – as companion, care manager, hands-on health provider, surrogate decision-maker and advocate. Rates of depression are especially high with such healthcare and caregiving stressors. Thus, much of our lab's focus is on assessment and intervention for depressed older adults and these women who help their aging family members and friends.
Through our programmatic research, we aim to (1) develop clinical training resources for mental health practitioners who work with older adults and family caregivers and to (2) evaluate strategies for dissemination and implementation of evidence based practices. Our work falls within the fields of clinical/community psychology and behavioral medicine.
