Threats to Validity

There are many threats to this study:

  1. The source of initial data. The initial list is taken merely from System Analysis website. It should be gathered from literatures or survey so the list can picture a better snapshot of what CASE tools products the market really use and required.
  2. Evaluation Method. Method for evaluating and selecting CASE tools was too simple and naïve. It should deploy a more comprehensive methodology as suggested by [2], [3], [7], and [8]. Methodology suggested by [8] is perhaps the best to deploy as it being standardized by ISO which usually gains wider acceptance.
  3. Data extraction. Data was extracted simply by comparing features listed in their documentation or white paper. The result of this method is ambiguous. It is suggested that data extraction should be supported by a qualitative tryout of the executable and survey.

Conclusion

Regardless the price tag they have, the most comprehensive CASE tool in the market based on the list are Rational Rose and MetaEdit+, moreover they are frequently referenced by academic publications. These products has integrated features from the upper CASE to lower CASE. But, if price plays a bigger role, then ArgoUML is the best choice since it’s an open source CASE tools. However as [4] suggests, many organization used CASE tools to generate communication media, i.e. visual diagram. In this case, it is best to select CASE tool which merely include the diagramming capabilities, such as: Visio or Smartdraw.
