Employment History
1997 to present. Professor & Chair. University of Missouri at Saint Louis, College of Education, Division of Counseling & Family Therapy, Saint Louis, Missouri. Appointed to this full-time, tenure-track academic position in January, 1997. Responsibilities include teaching and coordinating the career development program, CACREP accreditation self-study, master's admissions in community counseling, and comprehensive examination. Developing and teaching courses in the following: counseling the chemically dependent, career information and development, advanced career development, personal and professional development in counseling, individual inventory, multicultural counseling, advanced practice in counseling, advanced multicultural counseling. Appointed as Associate Professor, 1/1997. Awarded tenure, 2/2001. Promoted to Full Professor, 2/2006. Appointed as Chair, 8/2006.

1998 to 1999. Director of Counseling Services. Ranken Technical College, Saint Louis, Missouri. Hired by this highly acclaimed vocational/technical college to develop a counseling service for them. Hired and supervised the counseling staff and developed the overall program including testing services, career counseling, addictions counseling, study skills workshops, and others.

1991 to 1996. Founder. The Mark Pope Career Counseling Center: A Nonprofit Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Career Services Agency, San Francisco. Founded this agency to provide low-cost career services to the sexual minority communities of San Francisco. Center was originally called the Gay and Lesbian Career Development Institute, renamed in 1994 by advisory committee. Also provided career counseling supervised internships for individuals who wish to train in this career counseling specialty area.

1988 to present. President, Principal, and Founder. CareerDecisions International (A Career Counseling & Consulting Firm), Saint Louis. Administrative responsibility for the strategic planning, direction, personnel, marketing, and finances of this international firm. Design and conduct the program to provide individual and group career counseling services to clients. Develop and implement human resource management programs for both profit and intentionally nonprofit businesses. Train internal career development specialists for these businesses. Design and conduct personnel testing programs for these businesses. Provide research and statistical analysis consultation to individuals and businesses conducting research and/or program evaluation. Design and implement career planning, testing, and development programs. Supervise counseling interns. Develop curricular proposals in human factors, computer systems, and counseling in business and industry. Supervised the development, renorming, and translation of psychological inventories into Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese. Assist in establishing post-secondary career counseling in Malaysia and Singapore. Train consulting and counseling staff in the use of psychological inventories in career counseling. Conduct workshops on a variety of subjects including career development in organizations, counseling and coaching skills for managers, diversity training, and advanced use of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator.

1991 to 1995. Director of Psychological Services. Native American AIDS Project/American Indian AIDS Institute, San Francisco. Provided psychological services to native people with AIDS as well as to their families, especially their domestic partners or spouses. Designed and implemented a peer support group for native Americans with AIDS. Provided consultation and supervision for counseling, case management, and administrative staff.

1987 to 1989. Consulting Psychologists Press, 3803 E. Bayshore Road, Palo Alto, California.

Coordinator of Professional and Technical Support. Coordinated all support services to mental health professionals including software technical support, psychological inventory information and support, qualifications. Designed, organized, and provided the training for the customer service representatives and other staff who provide product information to customers. Designed, organized, and provided training to staff on a variety of software systems in use on the central minicomputer. Provided technical support and consultation to Operations Department.

Software Development Editor and Psychological Test Specialist. Coordinated all software development. Designed and implemented all testing software, including software to administer, score, and interpret psychological and career tests. Edited both software and manuscripts. As the Psychological Test Specialist for this company, assisted and advised mental health professionals having technical questions concerning any of the over 150 tests which this company publishes, including the Strong Interest Inventory, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, California Psychological Inventory, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Chaired the Editorial Review Committee. Critiqued and provided analysis for manuscripts submitted for publication.

1983 to 1987. Supervisor of Information Systems. Bechtel Engineering and Construction Companies, Controller/Management Information and Planning, 50 Beale Street, San Francisco, California. Designed, tested, and installed marketing research software systems, including competitor and client tracking, and historical project information for the directors and senior management. Designed and implemented individualized computer training programs. Wrote enhancements to board of directors and senior management reporting systems. Wrote much of the system-wide documentation. Responsible for annual capital budget of $200,000. Responsible for mainframe-minicomputer-microcomputer communication. Installed and responsible for hardware including four minicomputers, ten microcomputers, and their assorted peripheral devices (disk drives, terminals, dot-matrix/letter quality/laser printers, modems, plotters, and typographic equipment).

1981 to 1983. Computer Operations Manager. Pacific American Group, Opera Plaza, 601 Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco, California. Directed the operations staff of this international insurance group as well as programmed and documented the various automated report generating systems. Designed and implemented training program for computer users in insurance. Designed and implemented automated systems for loss review, claims, premiums, and accounting packages, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger. Designed and implemented computer anxiety project. Installed and responsible for hardware including a minicomputer and its assorted peripheral devices (disk drives, terminals, dot-matrix/letter quality/line printers, and modems).

1978 to 1981. Executive Director. Data Psych Systems, New York and San Francisco. Designed and implemented behaviorally oriented computerphobia programs. Designed and implemented a career planning, testing, and development program. Developed computer based training programs. Wrote software documentation. Developed curricula for universities for ergonomic design of work environments, computer applications in counseling psychology, and counseling in business and industry.

1977 to 1978. Research Interviewer and Drug Abuse Counselor. Chicago/Cook County Treatment Alternatives to Street Crimes, Chicago, Illinois. Interviewed paroled heroin and polydrug users for National Institute of Drug Abuse funded research project administered by the University of North Carolina. Provided individual counseling and case management for client population on the southside of Chicago including heroin and polydrug users.

1976 to 1977. Career Counselor and Psychological Test Consultant. Methodist Youth Services, 542 S. Dearborn, Chicago, Illinois. Designed career testing and counseling program for adolescent males in a residential environment. Trained counselors in psychological testing for career interests. Provided individual counseling and case management for adolescent males who were wards of the state.

1975 to 1977. Director and Founder. Horizons Professional and Peer Counseling Services/Gay Peoples' Counseling Services, Chicago, Illinois. Founded this community counseling agency on the Northside of Chicago. Designed and conducted the training program for the peer counseling staff as well as the professional staff. Established and chaired the professional advisory board.

1975 to 1976. Mental Health Worker and Career Counselor. Northwestern Institute of Psychiatry, Adolescent Unit, 320 E. Huron, Chicago, Illinois. Designed the career counseling program and provided psychological testing and counseling at this Institute's high school for emotionally disturbed adolescents. Facilitated group counseling sessions for the adolescents and their parents.

1974 to 1975. Drug Abuse Counselor. Illinois Drug Abuse Program, Brotherhood Clinic, Chicago, Illinois. Provided individual counseling and case management for client population on the southside of Chicago including heroin and polydrug users.
