Your Degree Option
University of Missouri-St. Louis offers a Bachelor's of Science degree in Elementary Education in partnership with St. Louis Community College-Wildwood. This two year degree completion program is designed primarily for students who have completed the Associate of Arts degree in Teaching with an emphasis in elementary education at the community college. Many of the UMSL courses will be delivered on the Wildwood campus providing students with the flexibility and convenience of taking courses in their own community. The program also provides additional flexibility with online course offerings. The newly redesigned "Metro Cluster Community Program," undergraduate curriculum affords education students the opportunity to work in school settings with experienced teachers in the earliest Level 1 exploratory courses. Field experiences, internships and student teaching are linked developmentally throughout the program as students interact with pupils and teachers in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Two Study Abroad Programs are available to Teacher Education Program students. Student teaching can be completed in Fuxin, China or in Seoul, South Korea during the Fall or Winter semesters .
Applications for the program are available online at http://www.umsl.edu/admission/apply/index.html or may be obtained through the UMSL advising office at the Wildwood campus.
Your Career
The Elementary Education program prepares students to teach in grades one through six. A special feature of these programs is the many opportunities to work with children in schools as part of the professional course work. Undergraduate and graduate degrees in elementary education are most directly applicable to teaching at the level appropriate to the program emphasis. Increasing specialization of teaching assignments and downward extensions of ages of schooling continue to open employment opportunities. As in the past, elementary education graduates at all degree levels also continue to be attractive candidates for employment in many positions, which require (or are well suited to) training in social and behavioral sciences. Positions in constant contact with and service to the general public such as sales, service, public relations, and general business are most common examples. Future expansions of opportunities in schools are tied to population growth, increased specialization of services, and reduction in ratios between professional staff and children served. Many currently employed teachers will retire within the next 5-10 years; consequently, a shortage of teachers is anticipated.
