Highly respected nonprofit leaders will present workshop geared to improving board’s effectiveness and strengthening leadership relationships

ST. LOUIS – September 19, 2012 – The University of Missouri–St. Louis Nonprofit Management & Leadership (NPML) Program announces a new workshop titled “How to Develop an Effective Board for Your Nonprofit Organization.” The workshop takes place at 2:00–5:00 p.m., Thursday, October 25, 2012, and meets in Room 202 in the J.C. Penney Conference Center at UMSL. Nonprofit staff, executives, and board leaders, including incoming board officers, will learn promising practices based on the latest research for making their boards even more effective and their staff-board relationships more productive and satisfying.
The NPML Program is excited to offer this program because of the importance of highly effective boards in the nonprofit community. As noted by Ann Vazquez, president and CEO of the Lutheran Foundation of St. Louis, “A strong nonprofit organization is always spearheaded by a strong board. Leadership training for board members at all levels is key to cultivating a strong and effective board.”
The Rev. Starsky Wilson, president and CEO of the Deaconess Foundation, echoes Vazquez’s sentiments. “An effective board is nurtured, not recruited,” he says. “Crafting an intentional journey of board learning and development is critical to delivering mission.”
Topics to be addressed at the workshop include the board’s primary responsibilities, including the principles and legal framework for them; promising practices from the latest academic research on nonprofit boards; and successful methods for boards and executives to determine which of their leadership roles are best kept distinct and which best performed through their partnership.
The workshop brings together three highly respected presenters: John McClusky, PhD, founder and director emeritus of the NPML Program; Peter Ruger, senior lecturer in law and co-director of the Washington University Law School Intellectual Property and Nonprofits Organizations Clinic; and Faith Sandler, executive director of The Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis. Together, these presenters bring a wealth of academic and practical knowledge to this topic from many decades as educators, trainers, consultants, and board and staff leaders of nonprofit organizations.
Attendees have the opportunity to share with peers the greatest challenges and successful strategies for strengthening board effectiveness. The learning activities will mix presentation, discussion, and ample time for applying learning directly to your board performance and executive-board relationships.
