Aphakia

Objectives of this lecture:

1. To understand contact lens applications in aphakia

1.Why Contact Lenses

          a. Poor IOL Candidate
          b. Reduced Magnification
          c. Restricted Field

2. Fitting (RGPs)

          a. 4-6 weeks after surgery
          b. Often RGPs due to eye health, vision, and handling
          c. High Dk RGP with minus lenticular
          d. Fit steeper than k

3. Hydrogels

          a. (1) Poor fit with RGPs
              (2) Infant (Silsoft Super Plus)
              (3) Low cylinder
           b. Use EW material
           c. Can they handle lenses?
           d. Complication rate much higher due to:
              (1) Thickerlens
              (2) Extended wear (30 days?)
              (3) Decreased tear volume
           e. Replace lenses often; patients can come to office for cleaning and disinfection.
              Otherwise RTC q 6 mo.
