Outcomes for 4000-level literature
courses 4/28/08
The 4000-level literature courses
require students’ mastery of the outcomes cited in the 2000-level survey
courses, but they also require demonstration of the following:
Demonstrate advanced skills in reading
and textual analysis;
Demonstrate mastery of the content
of a specific/specialized field of literary study;
Demonstrate knowledge of the
historical and critical context of a specific literary field;
Recognize and use correctly the
terminology of the particular genre or field;
Understand the role played by
gender, race, class, and ethnicity (where appropriate) in literature and
literary theory;
Understand the application of a
variety of critical approaches to literary texts;
Demonstrate the ability to write
clear analytical essays incorporating both primary textual evidence and
secondary scholarly and critical sources.
