Washington University - School of Medicine
Dr. William Julius Wilson, Lewis P. And Linda L. Geyser University Professor at Harvard University, will be the guest speaker for the January 19, 2009 Martin Luther King Celebration lecture. A sociologist and leading scholar on urban poverty, Wilson is the author of numerous publications including "The Truly Disadvantaged" and "When Work Disappears: The World of the New Urban Poor."

8th Annual Youth Violence Prevention Conference
Gangs: Unique but Similar - Implications for Social Response
This year’s program focuses on similarities of youth gangs across the United States and Europe. Presenters will highlight the similarities that have been observed in studies of American and European gangs. There will also be an emphasis upon societal responses to gangs, including discussion of the new strategy being pursued by the city of Los Angeles. Scheduled speakers: Judith Aldridge (School of Law, University of Manchester), Jeff Carr (Mayor's Anti-Gang Task Force, City of Los Angeles), Malcolm W. Klein (Sociology, University of Southern California), Cheryl Maxson (Criminology, Law, and Society, UC Irvine), Dana Peterson (Criminal Justice, University at Albany).
The conference is organized by UMSL CCJ Professor Finn-Aage Esbensen.

Criminal Justice Study Tour in Germany
This summer study tour is designed as an introduction to German culture, using the justice system as a focal point. Lectures during the first half of the tour will introduce students to the German justice system while the second half of the tour will consist of a joint seminar with German students. The program will be lead by Professor Finn-Aage Esbensen, UMSL CCJ. He will be accompanied by Professors Elmar Weitekamp and Hans-Juergen Kerner from the Institute of Criminology at Eberhard Karls University of Tuebingen.
