The Crockett Almanacks
& the Myth of the West

Cover of Crockett Almanack 1837

The Crockett Almanacks are considered among the "one hundred influential books printed before 1900" for their role in the development of American folklore and the myth of western frontier life. This exhibition explores the almanacs from three points of view:

  • The role of almanacs in early American life
  • The development of folklore and the myth of western frontier life in the Crockett Almanacks
  • The woodcut illustrations in the Crockett Almanacs that gave visual form to both fact and myth.
