About Federal and State Government Documents in Tangible Formats (paper/micro/cd-roms)

The UM- St. Louis Libraries participate in document programs on both the federal and state levels. The Libraries are part of the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) and select approximately 93% of the materials available. We are also part of the Missouri Documents Program and receive most materials available. Records for many of the documents from these two programs are included in the Library Catalog ( and may be searched just as if you were searching for a book in our collections. Many of the materials come to us in tangible formats - i.e. paper, microfiche, cd-roms, etc. Others are only available online. [See "About Federal and State Government Documents (online only)".] For additional information on federal documents, please see our "Government Documents, a Brief Guide" brochure.

Some Missouri documents are not cataloged, but are maintained in what is called the Missouri Vertical File. These publications are usually pamphlets, or smaller descriptive materials which we have chosen not to include in the Library Catalog. The Missouri Vertical File guide (available in paper or online) and the materials in the Missouri Vertical File cabinets are arranged by issuing agency and then alphabetically by title. If you would like to see an item from the Missouri Vertical File, please ask at the Reference Desk.
