UMSL’s College of Optometry offers the only professional training program for optometrists in Missouri and is one of just 21 Association of Schools and College of Optometry member institutions in North America that award a Doctor of Optometry.
Our outstanding faculty advise and mentor students while they seek to find new ways to manage eye and visual abnormalities. We are proud of the outstanding educators and scholars among our faculty.
Optometry Degree Programs
UMSL optometry students earned a 98 percent pass rate for the three phases of the national licensure exam. The national average is 95 percent.
The fourth year of the professional program at the College of Optometry consists of six eight-week advanced clinical rotations (externships) in the core optometric discipline. One of the rotations must have an ocular disease emphasis and one must be in a large general clinical setting. These externships give students real-world experience and allow a chance to explore the breadth of the field of optometry.
The on-site accredited post-professional residency programs allow select graduates the opportunity to seek more intensive and specialized clinical experiences following completion of OD in two specialty areas: (1) cornea and contact lenses and (2) pediatrics and binocular vision. Practitioners enrolled in these programs are fortunate to work with our internationally known faculty in the above disciplines.
